April 20-Russian petrochemicals manufacturer Nizhnekamskneftekhim (NKNH) is to postpone its project to build a one million tpa ethylene production complex in favour of a synthetic rubber expansion plan.
Originally, the polyolefins producer aimed to construct the ?.1bn complex in Russia s Tatarstan semi autonomous republic as part of a five-year ?.2bn investment programme to 2015.
By 2012, Nizhnekamsk-based NKNH planned to raise its current ethylene capacity of 600,000 tpa to 1.2 million tpa. to boost polymer output. The complex is to have a 600,000 tpa PE capacity and one of 370,000 tpa for polypropylene.
But now, instead, the firm intends to focus on the manufacture of between 700 800 tons of synthetic rubber by the year 2014, NKNH ceo Vladimir Busygin was quoted as telling the annual shareholders meeting in mid April (2010) by Russia s RCC news service.
The Tatarstan company, which today exports between 45% and 68% of its production of various grades of synthetic rubber, has switched its manufacturing priority to respond to international demand.
NKNH said it is postponing the ethylene complex project for a year and a half because of the changing situation in global financial markets , according to RCC news.
In 2008, NHNK became the largest Russian producer of polystyrene. The firm is constructing a 60,000 tpa ABS production plant, which is scheduled to be launched next year (2011).
