April 29-Chemical company Celanese is closing its acetate manufacturing facility in Derby and consolidating production at sites in Belgium, the US and Mexico.
"The consolidation is designed to strengthen the company's competitive position, reduce fixed costs and align future production capacities with anticipated industry demand trends,"said Celanese.
The UK plant currently produces approximately 41,000 tons of acetate tow and 60,000 tons of acetate flake per year.
As a result of the proposed closure, Celanese expects to record a non-cash impairment charge of $72m (?4.6m) during the first quarter of 2010.
