April 28-Finalists have been selected in the Design Innovation in Plastics Awards 2010, which is the 25th anniversary year of the awards.

Entrants were asked to create plastic product ideas that interpret the theme Refreshing Design and which addressed economic and environmental concerns. The resulting entries ranged from a flat-pack mini greenhouse, a folding bicycle and a backpackers laundry system to products concerned with the conservation and filtration of water.

Design Innovation in Plastics is the longest-running student plastics design competition in Europe and is run by the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining and the Worshipful Company of Horners, with sponsors from the plastics industry, including headline sponsor Bayer MaterialScience.

The six finalists who are students at Aston University, Northumbria University, London South Bank University, University of Huddersfield and the Royal College of Art will receive feedback from the judges which enables the finalists to refine their designs for the final judging stage.

This session will be held on 1 June in the Visionworks Material Science Learning Zone, an education centre sponsored by Bayer MaterialScience, and run by the Royal Armouries education team, adjacent to the Tower of London.

The finalists will hear who has won in an awards ceremony on 25 June, which will be covered by PRW.
