May 17-DSM Thermoplastic Elastomers has a new application for its Sarlink TPV police handcuffs. Milspec, based in North Carolina, the US, chose the thermoplastic vulcanizates for the base material of its Cobra Cuffs restraints.
Jim Reaves, CEO of Milspec, called the Sarlink cuffs virtually unbreakable . We could find no other product that offered this balance of properties and could also be processed in a complex tool, he said.
The TPV material, which replaces steel, has a number of advantages:
* Officers can carry several pairs for mass arrest or crowd control situations.
* The handcuffs can be fully folded and the weigh less than metal cuffs.
* Metal cuffs need to be cleaned after an arrest, while TPV cuffs are disposable, and potentially recyclable.
* The Sarlink cuffs can be made in multiple colours, which makes colour coding possible so that detainees can be processed according to criminal charges.
Sarlink TPVs are currently used in many applications such as wire and cable, pipe seals and under the hood. This new handcuffs application proves that Sarlink TPVs are suitable for innumerable applications in various industries, said Sarlink North American distribution manager Brian Gumbko.
DSM Thermoplastic Elastomers has production operations and laboratories in the US and Belgium. The company is a unit of Royal DSM NV of Herleen.
