May 27-Oil spill has hit more than 160 km of the shoreline of the U.S. state of Louisiana, state governor Bobby Jindal said Wednesday.
Jindal, in comments broadcast live by CNN, criticized the federal government for "too little, to late" response to the massive oil spill unleashed by the explosion of a drilling rig off the Louisiana shore late April.
Earlier on Wednesday, the Louisiana state government estimated some 72.4 km of Louisiana coastline is affected by the spill. Jindal said he received the latest estimate Wednesday.
"We don't have time to wait," said Jindal.
Louisiana officials have asked federal authorities to approve the state's plan to dredge up berms to protect Louisiana's marshland, home to fish and wildlife, including some endangered species.
