Michelin UK gets pro-active on tyre labelling

June 9-A full page article on tyre labels in The Guardian newspaper came about following a round-table discussion organised by Michelin UK.

The article explains clearly the strengths and weaknesses of the labelling system, as well as consumer attitudes to tyres. It suggests that most of the experts involved on the panel thought labels are a good thing, but that the label would have been more informative had it included data on tyre wear properties.

Another drawback is that the label does not name the make and model of the tyre to which it refers, allowing the potential for mistakes or deliberate fraud. The label proposed by the US NHTSA does include data on the make/model of the tyre to which it refers, so there is no room for error.

The event, which took place at the Aviator hotel in Farnborough, UK, was hosted by The Guardian newspaper in association with Michelin and was chaired by its executive environment editor Joe Confino.
