Strike yet to affect South Africa s RBCT coal exports

A strike at the Richards Bay Coal Terminal (RBCT) in South Africa has yet to affect the terminal, a RBCT spokeswoman said today.

The strike by the Satawu trade union entered its fifth day today as the union pressed its demands for a wage increase of up to 12pc for some workers, while RBCT has offered 9.5pc. Domestic inflation is around 5pc.

This follows a three-week strike by Satawu and another trade union at state-owned coal rail operator Transnet in May, which disrupted coal shipments to RBCT.

The terminal exports around 62mn t/y of coal, mainly to power utilities in Europe and India. RBCT is privately owned by a consortium of mining firms, including UK-Australian miner BHP Billiton, Australia-based Anglo Coal and Switzerland-based Xstrata.
