ECONOMIC REPORTS Data this week includes the Institute for Supply Management manufacturing index for July and construction spending for June (Monday); personal income and spending for June, pending home sales for June and factory orders for June (Tuesday); ADP employment for July and the I.S.M. service index for July (Wednesday); weekly jobless claims (Thursday); and unemployment for July and consumer credit for June (Friday).
CORPORATE EARNINGS Companies reporting earnings will include Humana (Monday); Archer Daniels Midland, Clorox, Dow Chemical, D. R. Horton, MasterCard, Molson Coors Brewing, NYSE Euronext, Pfizer, Procter & Gamble, CBS, Electronic Arts and Whole Foods Market (Tuesday); AOL, Hartford Financial, Qwest Communications, Sirius XM Radio, Time Warner, Allstate, the News Corporation and Prudential Financial (Wednesday); Beazer Homes, Cablevision, Cigna, DirecTV, Viacom and Kraft Foods (Thursday); and the Washington Post Company (Friday).
IN THE UNITED STATES Ben S. Bernanke, the Federal Reserve chairman, will speak about challenges for the economy and state governments at the Southern Legislative Conference in Charleston, S.C. (Monday). Treasury Secretary Timothy F. Geithner will talk about the next steps for financial reform at the New York University Stern School of Business (Monday).
The automakers will report their sales for July (Tuesday).
The Bureau of Ocean Energy Management, Regulation and Enforcement will start a series of fact-finding forums in New Orleans to collect information and views about deepwater drilling safety reforms, well containment and oil spill response (Wednesday).
Retailers will report same-store sales for July (Thursday).
