Several Malaysian companies are taking part in a biomass training initiative sponsored by the EU this year, aiming to develop a more competitive sector.

The EU-funded project, co-ordinated by Malaysian biomass support organisation Biomass-SP, aims to promote tie-ups in the industry and research institutions and address the country's inconsistent biomass supplies. The programme continues until September, an official from Biomass-SP said. The organisation will also launch a four-year project, the EU-Malaysia Biomass Entrepreneurs Nurturing Programme, towards the end of the year, the official said.

There is huge biomass potential in Malaysia, with the country's oil palm industry estimated to be able to produce 1,065MW of electricity and 270MW of biogas. Malaysia's biomass fuels account for about 16pc of the energy consumption in the country, of which 51pc is from palm biomass and 22pc from wood waste, according to Malaysia's Energy Information Bureau. Biomass-based power generation capacity in Malaysia stands at 138MW, with 100MW used in the palm oil industry.
