Chevron said Thursday that it has discovered natural gas in the Exmouth Plateau area of the Carnarvon Basin offshore western Australia, an area the company is developing to feed its planned liquefied natural gas terminals.
The Brederode-1 exploration well, about 217 miles northwest of Onslow, was drilled to 9,022 feet and about 49 feet of net gas pay was found. The well sits in about 4,550 feet of water.
The find extends the gas resources farther offshore Australia and expands Chevron's discovered gas portfolio there, said Jim Blackwell, president of Chevron Asia Pacific Exploration and Production.
Chevron is the largest holder of undeveloped gas resources in Australia,it said.
Chevron's Australian subsidiary operates the WA-364-P permit where the well was drilled and has a 50% stake. Shell Development holds the remaining 50%.
Chevron in July also reported two other natural gas finds in the Carnarvon Basin.
The company is planning two projects in western Australia to process its gas finds there into exportable LNG: the A$43 billion ($38.5 billion) Gorgon project, which is already under construction and designed to produce 15million mt/year of LNG; and the Wheatsone project, proposed to process 8.6million mt/year but is still awaiting a final investment decision.
