US lawmakers propose cutting funds for Weaver's Cove permitting

p>Two members of the US House of Representatives from Massachusetts said Thursday they hoped to kill the proposed Weaver's Cove liquefied natural gas terminal by introducing legislation to cut off federal funding for the permitting process.

Representatives Barney Frank and Jim McGovern, both Democrats, said they would attach language to the House Energy and Water Appropriations bill when Congress returns from recess next month.

"If the bill is signed into law, the long fight to stop the LNG terminal will effectively be over," they said in a joint statement.

Legislative language the pair sent to a House subcommittee says no funds would be made available to "take any action to authorize the construction of any liquefied natural gas terminal or its infrastructure" within five miles of Fall River "or to authorize vessels carrying liquefied natural gas to serve such terminal."

Frank and McGovern played up the chances of getting the spending ban into law. "It would be highly unusual for this bill, which governs energy and water spending across the country, to fail to pass the House," they said in a statement.

Owned by Hess LNG, the proposed Weaver's Cove calls for a 400,000 Mcf/d terminal in Mount Hope Bay, about four miles from Fall River.

Neither Hess LNG CEO Gordon Shearer nor a spokeswoman for the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission was available for comment.
