In thin trading, the benchmark Nikkei-225 index gained 76.80 points, or 0.75 percent, from Friday to 10,355.99.
The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange added 3.02 points, or 0.33 percent, to 904.68.
