China suspends gas talks with Japan

In the latest development following Japan s arrest of a Chinese fishing vessel captain, the dragon nation has apparently postponed talks with Japan over a treaty on the development of a joint gas field in the East China Sea.
Japanese foreign ministry said China has postponed talks that have been carried out based on a summit-level agreement and is capitalizing on the unforeseen incident while trying to shift the median line claimed by Japan eastward so that it matches the border claimed by China.

It is presumed that the Chinese Foreign Ministry's announcement to postpone treaty talks with Japan over the joint gas field development and the Chinese research ship's demand that Japan suspend its marine survey in the disputed ocean area were related to the incident with the fishing boat.
China used to independently engage in gas field development in the East China Sea before Japan negotiated a basic agreement on joint development in June 2008.
However, Beijing has been slow in further talks, taking more than two years to start working-level negotiations aimed at signing a bilateral treaty.
Anti-Japanese sentiment in China is not as strong as in 2004, when a group of Chinese activists were arrested after landing on one of the Senkaku Islands.
