In an order issued by the Department of Revenue of India on July 30, 2009, India finalized raising tariffs on import of polypropylene from Oman, Saudi Arabia and Singapore to $ 977.67/mt, but has yet to implement them.
The action followed a petition filed by Reliance Industries and supported by Haldia Petrochemicals.
Oman Polypropylene, an Oman based polypropylene producer was later exempted from the duty. India's polypropylene needs are currently estimated at about 1.5 million mt/year, only a fraction of which is currently met by the Persian Gulf based producers.
