China's stocks closed lower Tuesday, with the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index down 1.61 percent, or 46.18 points, to close at 2,820.18.
The Shenzhen Component Index lost 1.6 percent, or 200.26 points, to end at 12,336.29.
Hong Kong stocks closed down 158. 23 points, or 0.68 percent, at 23,007.99 on Tuesday.
Japan
Tokyo stocks closed sharply lower Tuesday, with the key Nikkei index down 1.87 percent.
The benchmark Nikkei 225 Average plunged 188.95 points to 9,937.04, falling below the 10,000 mark for the first time since Nov. 17. The broader Topix index was down 13.65 points, or 1.56 percent, to 860.94.
Australia
The Australian share market fell to a two-month low today on Europe's sovereign debt woes and lower commodity prices, with the energy sector one of the few bright spots.
At the close, the benchmark S&P/ASX200 index was down 34.2 points, or 0.7 percent, at 4584.3, its lowest close since October 1. The broader All Ordinaries index shed 30.3 points, or 0.6 percent, to 4676.4.
