Consumer prices in Japan dropped 0.6 percent in October, the Japanese government said on Friday.

It marked the 20th month of decline for the country's key consumer price index (CPI), which excludes volatile fresh food prices.

In terms of product, prices of cigarettes rose 38.6 percent and energy prices climbed 4.0 percent.

The preliminary core CPI for the Tokyo's 23 wards fell 0.5 percent for November. It forecasts a further nationwide drop because it has been considered an indicator of broader price trends.

In September, consumer prices in the country declined 1.1 percent from a year earlier.
