China
China's stocks continued to fall Wednesday amid tightening concerns, with the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index down 1.32 percent, or 37.6 points, to end at 2,810.95 on Thursday.
The Shenzhen Component Index declined 2.08 percent, or 262.15 points, to end at 12,353.27.
Tokyo stocks closed higher Thursday with the key Nikkei index up 0.52 percent.
Hong Kong stocks closed up 79.28 points, or 0.34 percent, at 23,171.80 on Thursday.
Japan
The benchmark Nikkei 225 Average gained 53.55 points to 10,285.88, hitting a new closing high since May 14, when it finished at 10,462.51.
The broader Topix index was up 4.21 points, or 0.47 percent, to 891.60.
Australia
Australian shares rose 0.9 percent on Thursday, buoyed by surprisingly strong employment data, though retailers sagged after a profit warning from The Reject Shop stoked fears of poor Christmas sales.
The benchmark S&P/ASX 200 index picked up 41.4 points to close at 4,741.3.
