p>The first contract for undersea oil spill containment equipment was awarded Thursday by the consortium formed by four oil and gas majors to develop spill response systems in the Gulf of Mexico. ExxonMobil awarded the contract on behalf of the Marine Well Containment Co. to Technip, the oil and gas engineering and construction company based in France.

The company has been hired to engineer and design specific subsea components of the containment system, including the containment assembly, manifold, control umbilicals, accumulator, dispersant injection, risers, and flowlines, ExxonMobil said. ExxonMobil did not say how much the MWCC was paying for the services. The company announced earlier in 2010 it was joining with ConocoPhillips, Shell and Chevron to contribute up to $1 billion to develop and build equipment that would be available to respond to an oil spill similar in size and scope to the April 20 BP Macondo blowout. "We are on schedule to develop this specialized containment equipment that will significantly increase the industry's response capabilities in the Gulf of Mexico," said Lloyd Guillory, marine well containment system project executive. "In addition to the construction of new equipment, we are continuing efforts to secure existing system components to be available for near-term use." BP, which developed new containment systems to eventually cap and seal the Macondo well, has said it would contribute the equipment and technology to the joint venture.
