Europe: German gas futures contract traded on ICE for the first time

The first German gas futures contract has traded on the ICE Futures Europe exchange, the IntercontinentalExchange said in a statement.

The futures contract was traded Wednesday by Barclays Capital on a day that over 400,000 MWh in spreads and outrights were exchanged on the ICE Futures Europe platform.

"Our intention is to develop liquidity in Europe's principle gas hubs and help established trading links between them, so the fact that the TTF/NCG has traded, is an important market development," said Jason Pegley, head of utility markets at ICE Futures Europe.

German gas futures contracts deal with the physical delivery at the NCG and GASPOOL hubs and are traded in conjunction with ICE's UK NBP and Dutch TTF futures.
