China: US's SJR tests naphthenic 2000L base oil supply in E. China

US's San Joaquin Refining Co Inc (SJR) sent 500mt of 2000L environment-friendly naphthenic base oil samples to China recently, an East China-based trader revealed.

These samples were tried out in some large-scale tyre companies based in East China, he added. This was a preliminary move before the company entered the Chinese market, he said.

These resources were of small volumes and were trial products, so they would not cast any impacts on the current Chinese market, he opined.

These cargoes, at 215.6 of flash point, -1.1 of pour point and 80.6 of aniline point, were quoted at Yuan 9,500/mt, the source introduced.

Environment-friendly naphthenic base oils were in limited supplies in China, with inflows from Sweden's Nynas only, a domestic importer denoted. If SJR succeeded in exploring the Chinese market, domestic supply shortfall would be eased to some extent, he believed.

However, it would take long for type companies to renew their production formulae if they decided to adopt the new feedstock after the tryout, the trading source pointed out.

Therefore, before new formulae came into application, China's naphthenic base oil supply would maintain at current level in 1-2 year, the importer said.

SJR has a naphthenic base oil production capacity of 53,700mt/yr. It mainly supplies its cargoes to such companies as BP, ConocoPhillips and Chevron.
