Japan's Keiyo Ethylene shut its naphtha-fed steam cracker at Chiba in the east on Monday due to an unidentified mechanical problem, a company source said.
It is unclear when the company will be able to restart the steam cracker. "We are now investigating the cause of the problem," the source said. The steam cracker is able to produce 700,000 mt/year of ethylene and 400,000 mt/year of propylene.
Keiyo Ethylene is owned by Maruzen Petrochemical (55%), Mitsui Chemicals (22.5%) and Sumitomo Chemical (22.5%). Maruzen is running its naphtha-fed steam cracker, also located at Chiba, at 100% capacity. It can produce 550,000 mt/year of ethylene and 230,000 mt/year of propylene.
