The Portuguese government on Wednesday sent its condolences to Brazil for Tuesday's air accident, the worst ever in Brazil, government officials said.
The Brazilian authorities said that 176 passengers and crew died on Tuesday when an aircraft left its planned landing strip, crossed a major highway and hit four buildings before exploding.
The governor of Sao Paulo, Jose Serra, said there was no hope of finding survivors because the temperature in the aircraft had reached 1,000 degrees centigrade.
On the same day, Portuguese airline TAP cancelled a party planned to celebrate its first Portugal-Brazil flight.
TAP said that "all events related to the first flight by the company to Brazil have been cancelled out of respect for the terrible accident that happened in Sao Paulo last night."
The TAP flight, which is set to land in Brasilia at 4:25 p.m. local time, is the first direct flight between Brasilia and a European city.
