Russia backs Abbas' actions in Palestine

Russia on Monday voiced support for Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, urging the emergency government to take necessary steps to normalize the current situation.

The new government has been formed and sworn-in and "Russia, together with other members of the 'quartet' of international mediators, supported Abbas' actions, who used his constitutional powers," Itar-Tass quoted a Foreign Ministry statement as saying.

The quartet of Middle East peace mediators includes the United States, Russia, the European Union and the United Nations.

The emergency Palestinian cabinet, with 11 ministers, was sworn-in by Abbas on Sunday, after Hamas took over every facility of the Palestinian Authority in the Gaza Strip.

Hamas, which led the deposed Hamas-Fatah unity government, did not recognize the emergency government and continued working in the Gaza Strip, neglecting Abbas' decree sacking Prime Minister Ismail Haneya.

Moscow urged the emergency government to take "all the necessary actions to normalize the situation, improve the humanitarian situation in the Palestinian territories, and, most importantly, stop the Palestinian confrontation," Itar-Tass reported.
