Sudanese First Vice President Salva Kiir Mayardit denied on Sunday rumors that he had been killed by Sudanese army troops, describing the circulators of the rumors as "the enemies of peace."
Kiir, also president of the government of Southern Sudan, told the official SUNA news agency that "the enemies of peace wanted from such rumors to create a problem between the northerners and southerners in Sudan."
Kiir, who is also head of the Sudan People's Liberation Movement (SPLM) which rules in southern Sudan, called on the southern citizens not to believe such rumors and prevent what had taken place following the death of his predecessor John Garang from repeating.
Rumors circulated in Khartoum Sunday morning alleged that Kiir was killed as his helicopter was shot down by troops of the Sudanese Armed Forces loyal to the Khartoum government.
The SUNA reported that Kiir participated in a religious pray ceremony in Juba, southern Sudan, on Sunday afternoon.
The death of Garang, who signed a peace agreement with the Sudanese government in January 2005 to end a 21-year civil war between the south and north parts of Sudan, in a helicopter crash incident on July 31, 2005, led to a three-day riot in Khartoum in which some 130 people were killed and hundreds of others wounded.
