The United States will begin training of the Palestinian Presidential Guard this fall to help enhance its security capabilities, the State Department said in a statement.
The training program, which will run through early next year, will "enhance the capabilities of the Presidential Guard to carry out their primary function -- VIP protection," the statement said.
It will also "help improve the Palestinian Authority's capacity to deliver security for the Palestinian people and fight terrorism," the statement added.
The training program is part of a "framework agreement" reached between the United States and the Palestinian Authority during a visit to the West Bank by U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice early this month.
Rice pledged about 80 million U.S. dollars to provide security trainings for the Palestinians, the security guards of Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas in particular.
