The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) objected to constructing a high building near a medieval citadel in Cairo,
Egyptian Culture Minister Farouq Hosni said on Monday.
After examining the blueprint of the Cairo Financial and Touristic Center (CFTC) near the Salahedin Citadel, part of a World Heritage Site in Cairo since 1979, UNESCO strongly recommended to reduce the height of the building, Hosni said in a press release.
The UN body said in a report that the height should be reduced to 31.55 meters instead of the proposed height of 59.50 meters in order to be equal to the level of the enclosing wall of the Salahedin Citadel, which was built in the 12th century and has become one of the most important historic sites in Cairo.
The UNESCO report said the plan would constitute a major infringement on the visual integrity of the citadel.
In addition, UNESCO said it opts for an entire different use of the area in order to constitute an effective buffer zone for the heritage site.
A UNESCO committee will shortly visit Egypt to inspect the CFTC model to see whether it implement the UNESCO recommendation, said the press release.
