Russian president arrives in Portugal

Russian President Vladimir Putin arrived on Thursday in Portugal for an official visit and to participate on Friday in the 20th Summit between the European Union (EU) and Russia.
Putin was welcomed by Portuguese President Anibal Cavaco at Imperio Plaza, in front of Jernonimos Monastery in Lisbon.
Portugal's government deployed a strict security measures around Imperio Plaza restricting transit in the zone.
Putin arrived at Imperio Plaza with a 45-minute delay after landing at Figo Maduro military airport.
Putin greeted Portuguese Prime Minister Jose Socrates, Foreign Minister Luis Amado, Republic Assembly president Jaime Gama and Defense Minister Nuno Severiano.
The meeting between Cavaco Silva and Putin is foreseen at Belen Palace and he will offer a press conference after it concludes.
Putin will participate on Friday in the 20th Summit between the EU and Russia at the locality of Mafra, 28 km northwest of Lisbon. Portugal is holding this semester as the EU's rotatory presidency.
Russia is the EU's third mayor trade associate after the United States and China, but it is the EU bloc's main fossil fuel supplier.
