Italian President Giorgio Napolitano and Premier Romano Prodi will make separate visits to Washington in the coming months to meet with United States President George W. Bush, Italian News Agency ANSA said on Tuesday.
Napolitano will meet with the American president on Dec. 11, while Prodi will pay an official visit to Washington on Feb. 4.
A statement confirming the visits from the White House in Washington defined Italy as "one of the closest allies" of the United States which was providing "contributions of great importance to peace an security in the world."
Italy, the White House added, "has offered assistance to create safe and prosperous societies in Iraq, Afghanistan, Lebanon and in the Balkans."
White House spokesman Tony Fratto said Bush will discuss "a number of questions on the trans-Atlantic agenda" with both Napolitano and Prodi.
These will include "the democratic successes in Iraq and Afghanistan," the situation in the Middle East - "including preventing Iran from obtaining a nuclear capacity," support for Lebanon's democracy and sovereignty, a "peaceful solution" for the status of Kosovo and the agenda for next April's NATO summit in Bucharest.
Bush personally invited Napolitano and Prodi to visit him in Washington during his June 9 visit to Rome, when he was able to meet face-to-face with the two Italian leaders.
This will be Napolitano's first visit to the United States as head of state.
