China, Australia pledge to enhance comprehensive cooperation

Write: Akil [2011-05-20]

China is ready to make joint efforts with Australia to promote bilateral comprehensive cooperation, said Vice President Zeng Qinghong in Beijing Tuesday.

Zeng made the remarks when meeting with Australian Minister for Foreign Affairs Alexander Downer, who is here on a four-day China trip.

Regarding China and Australia as good friends and good partners, Zeng said the two countries have made great achievements in developing bilateral ties since the establishment of diplomatic ties 35 years ago.

China considers the development of China-Australia relations from a strategic perspective, and is ready to join hands with Australia to promote mutual-beneficial relations which will contribute to world peace and stability, Zeng added.

As for the Taiwan issue, Zeng said China appreciates the Australian government's adherence to the one-China policy and opposition to "Taiwan Independence".

In response, Downer said his government's one-China position will remain unchanged.

Downer said the Australian government is willing to make joint efforts with China to promote bilateral negotiation on a free trade agreement.

He regarded Australia-China relations as in the best period in the history of development. Australia welcomes China's rapid economic growth and the increase of its influence in the international community, he said.

Later on Tuesday, Chinese State Councilor Hua Jianmin also conferred Downer on bilateral ties.

Hua said he hoped the two countries could take the opportunity of the 35th anniversary of diplomatic ties to further cement trust and expand consensus.

Downer said his government will work closely with China to deepen bilateral cooperation in the areas such as environmental protection, climate changes and clean energy.
