Guangzhou Mayor Wan Qingliang met Mr Gregor Robertson, Mayor of Vancouver, during his recent visit to to Guangzhou. At their meeting there were detailed discussions on the concepts of low-carbon economy and the Guangzhou Asian Games. Mr Xu Ruisheng, Mr Chen Mingde, Vice Mayor of Guangzhou and Mr Xie Xiaodan, Secretary General of Guangzhou municipal government also attended the meeting.
Wan gave a very warm welcome to Mr Robertson, and briefed him as to progress in preparations for the Asian Games. He said, "It is the 25th anniversary of the friendships between our two cities and Guangzhou as you know will hold the Asian Games this year. Your visiting at this time is very kind. It is the best support on our preparation for the Asian Games, and it will surely promote the international friendly relations between our two cities."
Mr Robertson highly praised Guangzhou's preparation for the Asian Games. He felt that it is to a high-grade,standard, and highly-effective. It showed that Guangzhou is an international metropolis. He said, "Vancouver and Guangzhou both devoted to developing a low-carbon economy. Vancouver is now becoming the global centre of the world low-carbon industry. And it is a great pleasure to cooperate with Guangzhou on establishing a low-carbon economy. Mayors of Vancouver and Guangzhou then signed an "Environment Protection and Green Economy Memorandum of Understanding" after the meeting. The two cities are now resolved to cooperate on projects of clean power source and renovations.
