Guangzhou is again offering a temporary subsidy to low-income families as staple food prices continue to rise in the southern city, The Guangzhou Daily reports.
The subsidy, worth 12.8 million yuan or US$1.93 million in total, will benefit roughly 133,000 city residents. Each person will receive a one-time payment of either 60 yuan or 100 yuan to cover two months of living expenses according to his or her financial status.
The move represents local authorities' efforts to help low-income residents battle the rising cost of living caused by mounting consumer prices, said Li Zhizhen, Director of Guangzhou's Civil Affairs Bureau.
Consumer prices in Guangzhou have been climbing in recent months, particularly those of staple vegetables, meat, fish products and edible oil.
A further, though temporary, price increase is expected this month and in December when the city hosts the Asian Games and Asian Paralympic Games.
Guangzhou authorities have been giving out temporary subsidies since 2008 to help low-income residents get by as consumer prices have risen. The municipal government offered the most recent subsidy in June.
