China's security authorities have been making every effort to ensure security at the 2010 Asian Para Games which will open in south China's Guangzhou City Sunday.
A total of 182 police checkpoints had been set up to monitor people, vehicles and articles on the roads and waterways into the host city Guangzhou, provincial capital of Guangdong Province, said Yan Zhengbin, a senior official of Ministry of Public Security.
The checkpoints were scattered around Guangdong and its 12 neighboring provinces, municipalities and autonomous regions, said Yan Friday at a meeting on security for the Games in Guangzhou.
In those areas, police were instructed to step up checks for hazardous chemicals, and to resolve social conflicts and crack down on gun-related crimes and violence.
Security authorities there were asked to deploy more personnel on street patrols while fire and traffic departments were ordered to take precautionary measures against major fire and road accidents.
The coordination commission responsible for security of the Games had adopted "effective and necessary" measures to provide "a safe and favorable environment for athletes, coaches, officials and audiences," he said.
