The award-winning theses of the 2010 Shanghai Graduate Student have recently been announced by Shanghai Municipal Education Commission and Shanghai Municipal Academic Degree Committee. Altogether 136 PhD dissertations and 121 master's theses were on the winner list. With 35 PhD dissertations and 17 master's theses selected, SJTU ranked first in PhD dissertations and second in master's theses among universities and scientific research institutes in Shanghai.
The 35 selected PhD dissertations from SJTU have covered the widest range of disciplines ever, embracing 17 primary disciplines and 28 sub-disciplines. Eight dissertations were contributed by Clinical Medicine, four by Biological Sciences, three by Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering, two by Materials Science and Engineering, Electronic Science and Technology, Environmental Science and Engineering, Basic Medicine, Control Science and Engineering, and Mechanics respectively and other primary disciplines.
This shows the steady progress made in SJTU's doctoral education. Also it is the first time for Civil Engineering to contribute one award-winning dissertation.
The thesis selection for Shanghai Graduate Student Achievement Award is an important effort to establish an effective mechanism for quality supervision and motivation of graduate education and to improve the degree conferring quality. Recently, SJTU has held the promotion conference of "Project 985" Phase III on implementing the Innovative Talents Cultivation Scheme, which marks the beginning of a new SJTU reform to strengthen innovative talents cultivation system.
SJTU will take this opportunity to reform its cultivating mode, curriculum construction, education quality assurance system, innovation project construction, international cooperation and exchange programs for graduate students in order to improve its graduate education quality and the innovation capacity of its graduate students.
