Canada's six NHL teams are heading to the beach this summer as St. Catharines, ON apparel maker Calhoun Sportswear introduces a new line of board shorts, bikinis and tankini separates sporting the franchises' respective colours and logos.
Calhoun's Martin Myers and the NHL are confident the unflagging loyalty for Canada's teams extends into the warm months. "Beach attire is largely untapped territory for the NHL and they're very excited about the possibilities," Myers relates.
"They've known for some time that Canadian hockey fans don't simply turn off the switch when the playoffs end. Team loyalty is a year-round obsession. It's just been a matter of appealing to their off-season lifestyles."
And what are the diehard followers of the Canadiens, Senators, Leafs, Oilers, Flames and Canucks doing after the last whistle blows? "Our target market is very active: escaping to the beach and water parks, waterskiing, wakeboarding and, yes, even surfing.
You'd be surprised how many great surfing spots there are in Canada," says Myers. "But more than that, it's all about the summer lifestyle. These pieces look just as good at a backyard barbeque as they do carving waves."
Calhoun's team-branded beach wear is currently available at leading retailers like Sears and Spencer Gifts as well as many specialty clothing shops and fan-related outlets like the Calgary Flames Fanatic Warehouse.
Calhoun Sportswear has been a leading Canadian producer of branded apparel for 35 years. Headquartered in a 50,000 sq. ft. facility near the shores of Lake Ontario in St. Catharines, Ontario, the company currently holds licenses to produce a wide variety of activewear and related merchandise for Molson, Corona, The Simpsons, M*A*S*H, Peanuts and more.
