MAS Fabric Park (MFP) and the MAS Eco Go Beyond programme commemorated World Environment Day on 5 June with the participation of the three community schools in MAS Fabric Park and MAS Eco Go Beyond Green Cover Project.
Three schools in Thulhiriya, Thulhiriya Maha Vidyalaya, Ambepussa Maha Vidyalaya and Dudley Senanayake Madya Maha Vidyalaya participated in a tree planting campaign which aimed at increasing green cover in the park.
The three schools made arrangements for the students to bring plants which are endemic to this area; over 300 trees were planted. Three zones were segregated for these three schools in a non industrial area.
The Chief Guest, Mrs. Sandhya Wijebandara, Additional Secretary – Education Services and Establishment, Ministry of Education elucidated the immediacy of the need to address climate change and move to a low carbon lifestyle.
She also commended the commitment and work done by the schools on sustainable development.
Whilst the Fabric Park will be responsible for maintenance of these zones it will also facilitate regular visits by the student groups to sustain the initiative.
Each school was presented with a sponsorship of Rs 15,000 and a set of certificates for the 300 students. These three schools are currently working on applied learning projects on sustainability as part of the Eco Go Beyond programme conducted by MAS Holdings.
This green cover project looks at achieving the long term objective of increasing the green cover of MFP from the current 14% to 20% by 2012.
Achievement of this target in this industrial zone will be significant in positioning MAS Fabric Park as an eco friendly industrial zone.
The MAS Eco Go Beyond programme which commenced in May 2006 provides 11,260 students in 30 schools in Sri Lanka a theoretical and practical knowledge of sustainable development.
