As the South African Government implemented quota system on Chinese products, this year clothing import from China and the rest of the world has shown 40 percent decline, according to trade statistics.
Ebrahim Patel, General Secretary of SA Clothing and Textile Workers' Union (Sactwu), at the Fashion Imbizo in Cape Town announced that during past four years imports had shown a significant rise, but now a marked decline can be seen.
This has a very positive impact on local industry. Now retailers are sourcing clothing from home manufacturers. They have also committed to work with the union to re-establish manufacturing industries and to increase job opportunities by 15 percent this year.
According to South African Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), quotas restricted illegal imports into the country. As the country has duty free and quota free access into European Union and United States, the local companies should now be more aggressive in searching global opportunities.
