Leaders of Garment Workers Unity Forum yesterday said garment owners have started cutting salary of workers taking advantage of the blockade programmes called by an alliance of political parties over certain demands.
They said this while addressing a rally held at Gulistan crossing, which was followed by a protest procession.
Condemning the move, leaders said that owners of different garments started closing down many factories, carrying out retrenchment of workers and other oppressions on them.
They said payment to the garment workers is being cut in most of the factories on the excuse of the political crisis.
Sounding a caution, the leaders said if any massive labour movement was launched to address these issues, the owners would have to bear the liability.
Leaders called upon the workers to wage a movement unitedly against retrenchment and oppressions by the owners.
Shahidul Islam Sobuj, Mintu Mia, Tamij Uddin Biplob, Swapon Hossain, Alamgir Hossain and Abdul Quddus Khan, among others, addressed the rally with its president Moshrefa Mishu in the chair.
