Government has imposed anti-dumping duties on imports of textile and clothing to support domestic textile industry.
But FIFA, organizer of soccer world cup, convinced Government for duty free imports of products and services required for hosting 2010 Soccer World Cup.
Many stakeholders have shown disappointment when they knew about this agreement; they stated that this is partial decision and would affect negatively to the imports curtailing move.
By giving justification of this decision, Labour Minister Membathisi Mdladlana informed that if country wants to host great event like FIFA world cup, such facility should be provided.
One representative of National Economic Development & Labour Council (Nedlac) stated that the agreement was tantamount to the soccer fraternity's decision on trade policy.
Dot Keet of the Alternative Information and Development Centre condemned this decision saying that such different tariffs reflect Government s lack of strategy.
