According to Deputy Managing Director of Mahyco Monsanto Bollgard (MMB), Bipin Solanki, the area under cultivation of Bt Cotton Bollgard variety has trebled to 8.6 million acres this year compared to 3.1 million acres in 2005.
He said that farmers income also increased from Rs2, 100 crore to Rs7, 026.5 from last year due to increase in production. This means that farmers have earned Rs6, 700 per acre generating extra rural income of Rs7, 000 crore for farmers.
This technology helps the crop to weather the attack of insects who wipe out the bollworms and as a result there is an increase in the output.
Seeds trait price, the rate at which the company gives its technology to seed company has decreased from Rs1, 250 to Rs 880 this year. There are 55 Hybrid varieties available in the market which is expected to reach 100 by 2007 with company planning to introduce new varieties.
