Sri Lanka to explore free garment trade with Canada

To promote Sri Lanka s apparel exports, Sri Lanka and Canada are exploring the possibility of achieving clothing trade liberalization, and the related talks have been conducted in Canada.

As the competitions from Bangladesh, China, India and Vietnam etc, Canada apparel market is difficult for Sri Lanka to enter. Sri Lanka hopes to win the competition by increasing exports of high-quality clothing, while emphasizing on the advantages of labor standards.

According to statistics, there are about 1 million people engaged in garment industry in Sri Lanka, 90% of its products are exported to the United States, and the European Union markets. January to June this year, the Sri Lankan garment export got growth of 4%, with exports amounting to 1.32 billion U.S. dollars.
