Fiscal year 2008 is anticipated to produce over 300 lakh bales of cotton, while the output this season is expected at 250-lakh bales as against 243-lakh bales in the previous season.
However, the prime cotton maker in the country, Gujarat is estimated to produce 100 lakh bales this season against an 80 lakh bales last season.
Unfortunately, recent heavy rains would be a great factor for an adverse cotton production in states like Maharashtra, Gujarat and Andhra Pradesh. This would result in around 10 percent reduction in yield, but, estimated damage is not yet revealed.
As per industry sources, cotton growing regions in South Gujarat have been severely affected by rain, due to stagnation of water which is bad for the crop.
Places like Amravati and Akola in Maharashtra are the most affected areas, while reports on Andra’s damage are not clear.
