Over 40,000 employees from the textile industry, i.e. 15-20 per cent of the total number of employees, may be turned redundant next year, as a result of the fall of exports, and many firms consider giving up production. “Our most optimistic estimates show that next year the lohn production will fall 15-20 per cent, as a result of the lower demand on the foreign markets affected by the present financial situation. According to the information supplied by industrial operators, the number of employees may decrease by 15-20 per cent in 2009, meaning over 40,000 persons,” declared yesterday, in a press conference, Maria Grappini, president of the Owners’ Federation of Textiles, Clothing and Leather, quoted by Mediafax. At the end of July, 312,500 persons were working in the textile industry, against 342,000 persons at the end of 2007.
