London is currently seeing an explosion of talented knitwear specialists on its catwalks and in the London Fashion Week exhibition. Since the emergence of New Generation (NewGen) designer Louise Goldin on the catwalk three seasons ago, a succession of knitwear designers, keen to follow in her shoes, have been supported through the British Fashion Council’s (BFC) NewGen scheme sponsored by Topshop..
This February the London catwalk will see knitwear designers Louise Goldin, and for the first time Mark Fast, show on schedule. Displaying their collections, in the NewGen section of The Exhibition at London Fashion Week, will be Cooperative Designs and Craig Lawrence.
The knitwear movement in London is predicted to continue. Louise, Mark, Craig and designers behind Cooperative Designs, all graduated from Central Saint Martins, which has its MA graduate show on the official LFW show schedule this February. Course director Professor Louise Wilson, said “It is great to see new knitwear designers, emerging in London Fashion Week, who challenge the conventional view of knitwear and are designers to be reckoned with.”
Fashion Editor of The Daily Telegraph, Hilary Alexander, commented ‘”London Fashion Week has a rich heritage of knit wizardry, early on spearheaded by the young Royal College of Art graduate Julien Macdonald, whose knit-craft so entranced Chanel’s Karl Lagerfeld.
“More recently, grabbing the knit limelight is Louise Goldin, part of a new posse of young creative talents who have sprung to fame through Topshop’s New Generation scheme. Louise uses experimental knit techniques and yarns to weave contemporary magic and bold geometrics with a sporty, body-con twist. Now, following in both their footsteps, are fledgling, edgy talents such as Mark Fast, Cooperative Designs and Craig Lawrence, all recipients this season of New Generation sponsorship.”
London Fashion Week commences on Friday 20th February and runs until Wednesday 25th February 2009. The Exhibition at London Fashion Week is open from Saturday 21st – Tuesday 24th February, 10am – 6pm.
