A move is continuing to get tariff concession in readymade garment export to Russia with a view to increasing export in these days of tough global economic stringency.
Russia has provided tariff concession to 48 Bangladeshi goods but readymade garment item woven and knitwear not included in the list.
At present Bangladesh mainly exports readymade garment, jute and jute goods, shrimp, leather and home textile to Russian market.
Despite tariff concession Bangladesh could not make its position in Russian market due to its narrow product basket. Trade balance between Bangladesh and Russia always remained in favour of the rich nation.
The newly elected president of Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) Abdus Salam Murshedy said the country has to find out new export destinations to continue its export trend as the sector faces tough time due to economic downturn.
He said readymade garments as well as other exports were hit hard due to the global economic recession.
Murshedy said Bangladesh considers Russia as important market as it has huge potential to increase export.
According to him the sector in January last saw an order fall by 4.98 per cent while in February it was also negative at 17.58 per cent. "The scenario won't change dramatically in March," he said.
He also said in some particular cases the order cut was 75 per cent.
