India: Growth opportunity for value-retailers - ED, Max

Max, the biggest value clothing retailer in the Middle-East has recently unveiled a new store in Kolkatta. The outlet spread over 8,000 sq.ft will offer clothing for women, men and children, footwear and fashion accessories.
Since it is a value-priced store the range is between Rs 199 and Rs 599. Max has stores in 11 other locations like Mumbai, Delhi, Ahmedabad, Hyderabad, Indore, Calicut, Kolkata, Bangalore, Agra, Lucknow, and Nanded.
Divulging details, Executive Director of Max, Vasanth Kumar said, “We are currently the biggest value retailer in the country as currently we have 23 outlets across India and plan to ramp it up to 60 by 2011-12.”
He said a typical Max store was spread out over 10,000 sq. ft. on an average and each store netted between Rs 6-9 million per year. He added by saying that there was a very big growth opportunity for value-retailers in India.
