In a meeting which representatives of the Tungurahua Footwear Chamber held directly with Ecuadorean President Rafael Correa on December 8th, the chamber informed the President of their concerns and the need to maintain safeguards which favor the footwear industry at least until loans have been paid back which were granted to reactivate production.
Lilia Villavicencio, President of the Tungurahua Chamber, informed the press that President Correa offered his unrestricted support to continue working with the industry. Priority is to be given to training in order to improve competitiveness and gear production not only to internal demand but also to exports.
The meeting took place in the Ramada Hotel in Guayaquil and was also attended by Production Minister, Nataly Cely and other government bureaucrats.

The President of the Ecuadorean Exporters Federation, Bernardo Pérez was also present and the outcome of the meeting could not have been better, according to Lilia Villavicencio.
Ecuador has suffered from imports of cheap Asian footwear for at least a decade and this prompted the national government to make aid available to avoid the bulk of the industry being prejudiced due to its lack of competitiveness with Asian manufactured products.
