The president of the Brazilian Tanners Council (CICB), Wolfgang Goerlich, has been appointed as the new president of the International Council of Tanners (ICT) and will be the first representative of the Brazilian industry to hold the position in the coming February.
Born in Germany, Goerlich, who has been a veteran in Brazil's leather industry for many years and became president of the Brazilian industry organisation in August.
Industry expert said the new appointment reflects the importance of South American country in the industry worldwide now. The tanning sector is a significant driver of the Brazilian economy, employing around 50,000 people and contributing $3.5 billion to the country’s total income in 2008.
