Surat city which is the biggest hub of man-made fibre textiles in the country has received a rude jolt in the form of ‘leggings’, which according to one of the experts from the trade is grabbing market shares previously held by the fabric manufacturers of Surat.
The leggings which have become a craze among the young and old ladies of Surat is made from nylon or polyester blended with cotton and is entirely manufactured outside Surat since Surat has a virtually non-existent cotton industry.
Speaking to Fibre2fashion about the new trends developing in the city of Surat, Mr Devkishan Manghani, Secretary of Federation of Surat Textile Traders' Association (FSTTA) said "About 6.5 to 7 metre cloth material is used in making of one dress, but now it has been replaced by readymade leggings.”
“Leggings are made of knitted fabric which comes to Surat from outside Gujarat and is also imported and the 'kurtis' that too are worn as tops, are made from less quantity of fabric which again is not bought from Surat but is brought from other places.
“Along with a salwar-kurta dress a drape is also essential, but since a kurti-leggings combination does not need a drape, the loss of seven metres begin with a girl or women choosing a kurti and leggings instead of the traditional salwar-kurta.
“There has been a loss of around 30 percent of sales of textile products manufactured in Surat which has affected the sector to a great extent,” he concluded by saying.
