Designer Trunk Sale
Keep your eyes and ears open AFI News readers, as Glamour Mechanics will be hosting a Trunk Sale for local designers in Milpark in Johannesburg toward the end of June. The trunk sale will be on a Saturday at Glamour Mechanics' new studios and they hope to have around 8 - 10 designers selling good in one place.
The 2009 SAMA Yellow Carpet Shimmers
The Grammys and the Brits are major awards shows that bring the rich, the famous and the musically talented onto the red carpet to celebrate a year in music. Here in South Africa, the yellow carpet at the annual SAMA awards gets glitzier and more glossy each. With over three and a half million people watching on TV this year, AFI News took a peek at who wore what, and who should have a serious rethink before stepping out again next year.
General concensus was that the gentlemen looked good on the night in their dress suits. Sizwe Dlomo, in a classic purple Carducci prom suit, with black lapels and trim stood out among the men. Letting the Mother City down, the Cape Town rock bands got the thumbs down for not trying hard enough for such a smart ocassion. AFI News can give you Carducci's number for next year, chaps!
Thula Sindi kept things low key as he dressed Metro FM news reader, Melanie Bala in a beautiful turquoise number from his winter collection and Metro FM DJ and devoted client, Penny Lebyane, in turquoise and gold sequins. Former Miss SA, Tansey Coetzee, shimmered in a scarlet JJ Schoeman full length dress with a small train, and current Miss SA, Tatum Keshwar, looked elegant and beautiful in a sage green Kluk CGDT dress with lace detailing on the bodice. The big winner on the night, Lira, supported an emerging designer Sylvester Falate by wearing a emerald satin dress with a red waistband.
Newly shorn Kuli Roberts had to hold in her breath in her Sun Goddess leather corset and we are not sure how Siphokazi managed to move in her Strangelove creation that kept all the tongues wagging. Much talked about too, was the Swarovski crystal encrusted tunic dress that Tiger of Sweden had flown in especially for Tamara Dey. Even if it was shot for Italian Vogue, it is a bit disappointing that she did not opt to support a local designer at such a high profile event celebrating South African talent.
Shimmer and shine was the order of the day for the SAMAs in 2009. We eagerly look forward to what next year's yellow carpet will bring.
"But there were some very badly dressed people - almost like a premeditated faux pas - because they do say that photos of good fashion land up in prestigious magazines, but bad fashion lands EVERYWHERE," anonymous designer, SAMA attendee
