The Oregon Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) will hold a meeting Wednesday to answer questions from the public and provide information about the agency's role in monitoring Oregon Resources Corp.'s chromite mining operations in Coos County.
The meeting will be at 7 p.m., in the Myrtlewood Room at Coos Bay Public Library, 525 Anderson Ave.
DEQ also has extended the public comment period for the National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System General Permit 1200-A. The permit aims to ensure stormwater runoff at the mining sites is properly managed to prevent pollution. DEQ does not regulate land-use issues.
The comment period was extended until Wednesday, May 12, after several nearby residents did not receive notice of Oregon Resources' permit application in March. DEQ is only considering comments directly related to the mining firm's proposed stormwater pollution control plan.
